YEAR 3

Welcome to Year 3.

In Year 3 the teachers are Miss Goodall, Mr Fowler and Mr Wilsmore.

Working alongside the teachers are Mrs Prior, Miss Okoye, Miss Osei, and Mrs Giannotto.

In Year 3 we investigate Ancient Egypt and plants and how they grow. We will be learning about Ancient Egyptian life, timeline of events, River Nile, mummification and the geography and landscape of Egypt both past and present. In the spring term, we will also be finding out about the Stone Age, through experimenting with different materials and making cave paintings. Our Spring term book in literacy, ‘Stone Age boy’, will also allow us to see what life was like in the Stone Age.

In Literacy we will study Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Green Ship, Coming home, Stone Age boy, Oliver and the Seawigs. We will be looking at a whole range of interesting and exciting topics this year including: characters, settings, poems, diary entries and literacy through film. We even get to dress up as characters from our books! Children will be given spellings each week for part of their homework, and will be tested on these every Wednesday.

In Maths we will be learning mathematical concepts and processes from a Maths mastery approach.  We follow a scheme called White Rose Hub, which teaches the key concepts using a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach. We base all our lessons on the use of Concrete (physical) resources such as Diennes and place value counters. The children will then learn ways to represent these objects as pictures (Pictorial) before moving onto the abstract method (standard written column methods).

In RE we will be covering a number of topics which deepen the children's understanding of their faith, and we look forward to sharing their First Holy Communion journey with them.

Children will receive homework on a Friday and this is expected to be back on a Wednesday. Please ensure you read at home with your children at least tree times a week. P.E. kits should be in school on a Monday and only taken home on a Friday to be cleaned. The children change library books on a Friday afternoon. Computing time will be on a Monday afternoon.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask us!
